When my (now) 17-year-old was just a wee thing, I dubbed her the “bag lady”. During playtime, she would gather up items from all over the house and put them in various grocery bags. She said she was playing “grocery store”. Truthfully, it drove me nuts! I would find some of our flatwear in a bag with toiletries or toys. Other times, I might spot packaged cookies mixed with doll clothes. There was no rhyme or reason to her “bagging”. She simply bagged everything!
And…the fact is…she gets it honestly. Her mama loves bags of all kinds…purses, clutches, totes, you name it!
Recently, I realized the under-the-bed storage tote no longer worked for storing my purses and totes. It was overflowing. I made the attempt to simply get rid of a few, and I succeeded…well, maybe…
Truthfully, I realized I needed something more functional…something I could see and get to easier. Something that would hold a lot of bags. I knew just the thing!
A coat rack.
When I started envisioning the right tool to hold my various bags, I realized what I was picturing in my mind was a coat rack.
And so the hunt began!
I shopped thrift stores, flea markets, and yard sales. I didn’t want to put a lot of money into it, because (a) I would end up transforming it anyway, and (b) I get all kinds of thrills out of turning trash into treasure. That’s just me!
Finally, after a couple weeks, one of my co-workers sent me a text pic of a coat rack they spotted at a yard sale on a Saturday morning (yes – everybody knew I was coat rack hunting). I gave the virtual “nod” of approval, and the coat rack was purchased for me!
The transformation took very little effort.
I wiped down the wood and removed the hardware.
I spray painted the not-so-beautiful brass hardware a brown colortone.
The rest of the wood was spray painted white.
After drying time, I reinstalled the newly pained hardware onto the new white (coat) rack!
I love out how it turned out!
Ta-da! The bags are already at home on the recycled coat rack!
